ICYMI: For the 96th Oscars, I had the pleasure of speaking with Colman Domingo’s beauty team to get the tea on his male glam for the evening for ESSENCE.
The star set two tones for the evening:
Using a full face of Danessa Myricks Beauty products.
Choosing a Black-Owned beauty brand to partner with.
Domingo is at the height of his career being one of the most sought after men for brands to work with. He could’ve chosen any brand in the world for his makeup, yet he chose Danessa Myricks which speaks to his undoubted attention to detail and dedication to the culture.
Though there were other popular brands he worked with for the evening, (Aesop + Bevel) the focal point here was his glam which sent a sheer message to men, no matter your background or sexual orientation that it’s perfectly fine to get “done up” for special occassions or just in general. You don’t have to wear a full face of makeup or even look like you’re wearing makeup — it’s about enhancing for men.
Personally, I’m always fascinated by the tips and hacks men use subtly when getting their makeup done. For instance, many men like myself suffer from discoloration around our hairlines from years of being burned by barber’s clippers or the use of dirty clippers, so it’s important to really buff and blend the hairline portion for us to match our overall skin tone. This was a trick makeup artist Jamie Richmond used for Domingo with a bit of contour product.
You’d be surprised at how many men are obsessed with their vanity and reach out to me to get tips on how to get the popular “no makeup, makeup” look. (LOL) It’s honestly no big deal and doesn’t take away from your “masculinity” chile. If you have tired eyes and dark spots, conceal it. If you have sparse eyebrows, fill them in. If you want to even out your skin tone, use a skin tint, chile.
It’s really okay.
