Chile, when my mom would wash my hair as a little boy, I would cry so hard. My mom, a slender, southern woman with hands of an angel caused much pain and distress to my scalp on wash day — and I could never understand why.
This all started when I had long locks up until I was a pre-teen, and even when my hair was cut into a bald fade, the pain still continued when I would have my head washed. Mother washed my head all through my school years because I had a dandruff problem. The younger years was the worse because we didn’t know where exactly the issue was stemming from.
Over the course of time, I came to realize that the primary culprits behind my persistent dandruff issues were an unmanaged eczema condition and the use of shampoos with sulfates. It took a while, but once I was able to pinpoint these as the root causes, I begin to make necessary adjustments in both my lifestyle and the products I used. From there, the relationship I had with my wash days started to change — however, there was still pain.
Fast-forwarding to 2023-2024, I was still dealing with the pain of a tender scalp. It’s so awful that when warm or lukewarm to cold water touches my head, I have breathe deeply — that’s how severe my tender head is. While there’s nothing I can do about that part, but when I cam across these scalp massagers in early December of 2023 from Ceremonia, Briogeo and Bread Beauty Supply, my life was changed.
Are Scalp Massagers Worth The Coin?
This is coming from someone with a low bald-fade and a self-proclaimed “kitchen stylist,” but in my humble opinion: HELL YES!
If you have thick hair, taking down your braids in-between the changing of wigs/sew-in or switching your protective style — I would definitely say invest in a scalp massager.
What Scalp Massager Is Best For My Hair Type?
Personally, I’d recommend using Bread’s “Scalp Thingy”($18 USD) and Ceremonia’s “Scalp Masajeador” as they’re suitable for all hair types.
